Mammography
King's Daughters' now provides a new service that dramatically eases the discomfort many women feel when they get a mammogram. It's called MammoPad.
MammoPad creates a softer, warmer feeling during a mammogram. The recyclable breast cushion is invisible to x-rays and does not interfere with the image quality of the mammogram. Because of the increased comfort, women are often more relaxed during the exam, helping the technologist achieve the best possible image.
"We're pleased that we can make mammograms as comfortable as possible," said Rene Moore, OB/GYN Nurse Practitioner at King's Daughters' Hospital and Health Services. "Early detection of breast cancer makes a critical difference in our ability to treat the disease. The breast cancer cushion makes the exam more comfortable and will hopefully encourage more women to have regular mammograms."
The single-use MammoPad attaches to the compression plates of the mammography machine. It was developed by Stanford University breast surgeon Gale Lebovic, MD - who understood mammography discomfort from both a physician and patient perspective. According to studies in both the United States and Sweden, involving more than 1,300 patients, approximately 70 percent of mammography patients experienced a significant reduction in pain when using the MammoPad.
The American Cancer Society recommends that women age 40 and older receive a yearly mammogram. Women with a family history of breast cancer may need to begin screenings early. Ask your physician what recommendations are appropriate for you.
