2011 Shining Stars
JANUARY
Lisa Liter, PT - Rehabilitation Services: A patient wrote ... Lisa took care of my brother's leg after he was burned. Daily for six weeks she took care of him with dedication, compassion, and a smiling face that offered lots of encourgement through horrible pain. Lisa and her department are truly Shining Stars. They excelled in their kind and tender care of my brother's leg, which made a horrible experience tolerable.
FEBRUARY
Michele Taflinger, RN - Wound/Ostomy Clinic: A co-worker wrote ... I have called Michele numerous times to the Emergency Department to consult on my patients. She always arrives right away. She has a wonderful, positive attitude and is very knowledgeable with her speciality. She is competent, confident, and always goes the extra mile. She not only treats my patients, but taught me how to care for wounds when she is not here. She answered questions and taught me the best treatment.
MARCH
Missy Holt, RN - Intensive Care Unit: A co-worker wrote ... On a Sunday we had a nurse call in sick to 3-South. Needless to say, that Sunday turned into a super busy day. Missy was in the Intensive Care Unit so they called her to help. She was a Godsend! Anything that needed to be done, she did it and never complained. The nurses were being overwhelmed with admits and discharges, and Missy stepped in and took the load off of them so they could care for their patients. She did an awesome job, and we thank her. This is what teamwork does and this is what the KDH famiy does.
APRIL
Paul Hartman, Amy Hoskins, Kathy Schell - Social Services: A co-worker wrote ... Day in and day out the social workers of KDH spend countless hours trying to meet the needs of our patients and those of the community. They are a valuable resource to our patients as well as the clinical staff. They also spend countless hours assisting in the Emergency Department (ED) while being on call nights and weekends. On one particular day, there were four patients whom required placement to other inpatient facilities. There was a patient in the ED requiring the social workers to provide assistance to the local government. Many people do not realize that the social workers spend their time utilizing and often exhausting all resources to meet the needs of our patients. They are creative, compassionate, and kind. I am nominating these three exemplary people for not only an outstanding job on one particular day, but also for the work they perform day in and day out serving our patients, out staff, and our community.
MAY
Mark Storm - EMS: A co-worker wrote ... On a Friday night, Mark entered Walmart. Being the caring and compassionate person he is, he noticed a woman sitting down that appeared to be having some difficulty. He approached her and asked her if she was okay. He could tell by the look on her face that she was not. He asked her if she wanted him to call an ambulance and she told him yes, then collapsed. Mark could not feel a pulse so he began CPR. No matter if Mark is on or off the clock, he continues to perform his job. Because he took the time and asked if she needed help, Mark saved the life of my mother-in-law. Mark defines in my book what it means to be a Shining Star. We at KDH are very fortunate to have Mark as part of our team.
JUNE
Amy Hughes - Home Health & Hospice: A patient's family wrote ... Amy went above and beyond anything we could have expected. She was kind, considerate, knowledgeable, compassionate, and totally committed to helping our family get through a very difficult time. Had Amy not recognized the fact that my husband did not have long to live we would have not been able to allow family and friends to say their good-byes. Amy encouraged us to talk to him, tell him how much we loved him, and also to let him know that were were going to be okay. Amy kept his pain controlled and saw to his every need, and she saw that our famiy was taken care of also. I will tell everyone how much we appreciated the guidance, care, and love that was shown to my husband and our entire family. Only special people can deal with death in a way you can and help families through a very emotional, spiritual, and defining time. I will hold you in my heart forever.
JULY
Dave Pappenheim - Rehabilitation Services: A co-worker wrote ... Dave has served for a number of years as the athletic trainer for the high schools. In particular, he has pioneered efforts to bring concussion awareness to our community - especially in Madison. Since about 2002, we have had the concussive testing computer program that monitors an athlete's concussive injury effects. Dave brought this to the attention of the Madison School Board and championed Madison into using the program. This was several years ago when there was much less publicity about concussions and concussion testing. Our school was one of the first high schools in Indiana and probably the country to have its own system. We owe that to Dave Pappenheim. As more and more publicity about concussions reaches the forefront, I see multiple stories about how schools are using this. This has been commonplace in Madison now for approaching a decade.
AUGUST
Dr. John Hossler - Physician Services: A co-worker wrote ... I was in an accident and Dr. Hossler was the first to arrive. He checked on my granddaughter and myself. He then waited until the police and EMS arrived. He sat with my granddaughter while the police filled out paperwork. He then drove us home. This was above and beyond. We are priviledged to have him as a KDH physician.
SEPTEMBER
Cindy McKay - Physician Services: A co-worker wrote ... Cindy is undoubtedly one of the most pleasant and positive employees I have ever been fortunate enough to work with at KDH. She is truly committed to the organization and the satellite clinics. Over the past three years, she has gone above and beyond to help the clinics in any way she can, always working hard, long hours, keeping her positive attitude and bright personality. She has willingly gone above and beyond helping with many disasters including but not limited to: tornado cleanup, wind storm damage, lack of electricity, a flooded building at Main Street, flooding at the Carrollton Clinic, and ice and snow storm issues. Recently, she stepped up to the plate once again and helped with trash tracking during some of the hottest and most oppressive summer weather on record. During this time, she was upbeat, joking, and made the job at hand more tolerable to everyone.
OCTOBER
Renda Mills - Emergency Medical Services (EMS): A co-worker wrote ... On a day when the Emergency Department received many patients in a short amount of time, Renda noticed how busy the nurses were and immediately jumped in to help. She successfully started an IV on an ill patient and was a huge help to the nurses. She is definitely deserving of a Shining Star.
